Incandescent Pool Lights
These are the traditional “old school” lights used in most older pools. If your pool was built years ago, chances are you have one of these lingering in the deep end of your pool. These are the cheapest options available, but they are not energy efficient, have a short lifespan of about 1,000 hours and only offer flat, harsh lighting that creates a shadowing effect.
Halogen Pool Light Bulbs
Halogen lights were considered the next generation of pool lighting after the incandescent lighting phase. They are slightly more energy efficient than incandescent lights and have a longer life span of about 5,000 hours. They emit a brighter, cleaner light that lets off an intense glare that works well in darker colored pools. They also emit quite a bit of heat, running at a higher temperature such as this requires yearly replacements of the globe and O-Ring seal which adds more maintenance and cost.
Retrofit LED Pool Lights
LED’s are the latest in lighting technology and offer the longest life span of any bulb. They offer an average of 50,000-70,000 hours per bulb! To put that into perspective, if you were to run your LED pool lights for 3-4 hours per day, they would last more than 3 decades! LED’s offer a rich, vibrant light that travels further through the pool, illuminating a much larger space than any other lighting option. They emit a soft, warm glow that works well with lighter colored pools and enhance their beauty. Unlike other lighting options, LED’s come in a wide variety of colors that can be changed at the flick of a switch, the press of a remote, or can be programmed to change at the desired intervals automatically. Some brands of LED even come with their own smart phone app, giving you the flexibility to change the lighting from anywhere! To top it off, they are also the most energy efficient lights on the market!
