Commercial Electrical System Fire Causes & Prevention in South Bay, FL; Knob & Tube Wiring & More

Electricity has brought us light, conditioned air, and almost all our modern conveniences that we use every day. However, electricity should never be taken for granted. There are a number of both commercial and residential fires that are caused by electrical related incidents. Simon Electric will share some of the common causes in commercial buildings to help prevent possible fires in your commercial building.

Factors Causing Fire Due to Electrical System

1. Knob and Tube Wiring – Tube and Knob wiring was a common type of wiring used in many commercial buildings, and most especially in older buildings. When knob and tube wiring get damaged, they can become a fire hazard. Often, if the wires get chewed on or damaged by rodents, they can become a problem. If a rodent infestation was ever present or is still present, have the electrical wiring inspected.
2. Low Amp Wiring – As businesses come and go, they require different AMP needs. Years ago, buildings that housed businesses didn’t require the AMP both needed and required for modern companies. Many commercial fires are caused by too low AMP which are now required for modern equipment or power needs. When the AMP becomes overloaded, they cause problems with the circuit broad. The demands, which they were never designed to handle, leads to sparks and then fires.
3. Poor Wire Modifications – In older buildings, the wiring may not be up to current codes which help prevent fire and improve electrical safety. Sometimes, when a business is in its early stages of development, the owner isn’t in much of a rush to meet their current wiring needs. Poor installation is a result. Poor installation or improper modifications to a building wiring system can be hazardous and be the cause of many commercial fires.
4. Old Wiring – Buildings that are 15 years old or older can be at risk for electrical fires. Over time, wires will get damaged by nails, screws or pests. Additionally, wiring can expire. The rubber protective coating on many electrical wiring can dry and crack which leaves the internal wires exposed. To ensure the building’s safety it is important to rewire commercial building about every 15 to 20 years.
5. Faulty Breakers – The breakers in the building is another concern for and cause of electrical fires. Breakers can easily overload as they age, and the building may short circuit frequently. When a faulty breaker short circuits, it doesn’t just cause a loss of power. Many times, those sparks can lead to fires. It is recommended that you replace breakers as they show signs of wear or age.
6. Poor Electrical Design – Commonly found in older commercial buildings is wiring that may have not been installed properly. Electrical designs have greatly improved over the years, and now we have regulations in place to enhance electrical safety. These regulations are enforced. If a commercial building or center has never been updated or inspected, the current wiring design could be hazardous. To ensure the building or property is up to code, it is recommended to have the electrical system inspected and if needed, reinstalled to meet modern codes and regulations.
