Electrical Mistakes to Avoid in Atlantis, FL; Loose Wall Outlet Box, Hot & Neutral Reversed & More

We all know that electricity can be dangerous. Working with it requires the right tools, experience and safety measures to make sure it’s done effectively. From cutting wires to installing outlets to making electrical connections, there is a lot of room for error. Mistakes made can lead to problems and damage in the future, like shorts, electrical shocks or fires.

Cutting Electrical Wire Too Short

This mistake is all too common and happens when a new outlet or switch is installed. When wires are cut too short, the connection can be difficult and can become dangerous. The wires need to protrude about 3 inches in front of the box. If the wires are too short you can lengthen them with 6 inch extensions.

Making Connections Outside of a Junction or Electrical Box

As tempting as it may be to wire a connection outside where a box should be, it’s not a good idea. You need to add a junction box to make a connection. Junction boxes will protect the connection from any damage and will contain heat and sparks.

Installing Receptacles Without a Ground Wire

This is common with three slot receptacles and happens when you replace a wall outlet. If you’re replacing a two-slot outlet with a three slot outlet you must make sure that the outlet is grounded first. If you are not sure on how to do this, you should just replace it with another two slot outlet. You should also test the outlet to make sure the wiring has been done correctly. There are testers you can use to ensure there are no faults present.

Loose Electrical Wall Outlet Box

Outlets that are loose can shift and cause a wire to become loose from the terminal. This can cause wires to arc and overheat and create a fire hazard. If the outlet is loose, you can use plastic spacers to help secure the outlet when its mounted against the wall.

Leaving Cables Unprotected

This is another problem that can lead to problems. All cables located between framing must be protected. It actually required by electrical code. When cables are run under or over wall to ceiling framing it’s more susceptible to damage. Cables need to be protected by attaching a small board alongside the cable to keep stored items from damaging the cable.

Hot & Neutral Electrical Wires Reversed

This mistake can be deadly. Connecting the black hot wire to the neutral terminal is a potentially lethal mistake. The lights and electrical devices might still work, the system will be unsafe. When switches or outlets are changed, it’s imperative to make sure to connect the white wires to the neutral terminal. The neutral terminal is a silver or light-colored screw and the hot terminal is darker gold. Any wires around it will usually be green and the wire will usually be bare copper.
