Extension Cord Safety Tips in West Palm Beach, FL; Rules, Gauge, Length, Light or Heavy Duty, Indoor or Outdoor & More

If you are like most people, you run into times that you need an extension cord to get power to a desired location. Most of us have areas in our home that don’t have a convenient place to plug something in and will need to use an extension cord to solve the problem. While these cords are incredibly handy in getting power where you need it, it is important that they are used properly to avoid a safety hazard. Simon Electric is here to share some extension cord safety tips with our valued customers.

Extension Cord Gauge & Length

There are a couple different things that you need to keep in mind as you purchase an extension cord for your home.
– Wire Gauge: This is the diameter of the wire. The gauge of the extension cord will determine how much current can flow through it, and how hot it will get during the process of carrying the current. You don’t want your extension cord to get too hot as this could be a fire hazard.
– Length: You may be thinking that the length is going to be determined by how far you need the cord to reach. This is true, but there is more to it. The length is going to have an effect on how much voltage is lost because of the resistance in the cord’s wires.
These two factors will determine whether the extension cord you are buying is “light duty” or “heavy duty.” Light duty cords should be used only for light duty appliances. When you are using heavy duty cords, they are capable of drawing 10 to 15 amps of power and will require a three prong plug to operate.

Extension Cord Rules

Before you start using an extension cord, it is important that you understand some safety rules when using them. These guidelines are set in place to keep you safe and should always be followed.
– Don’t plug multiple extension cords together to extend their reach.
– Only plug one appliance into an extension cord at a time to avoid overloading the cord. This applies even if you are using small appliances.
– If the cord is marked as an indoor cord, you shouldn’t try to use it outdoors and vice versa.
– Never try removing the grounding pin to make the extension cord fit into a two prong outlet. When there is a grounding pin it means that the extension cord is designed to handle a higher voltage and removing that pin puts you at risk of an electrical fire.
– Discontinue use if the extension cord ever feels hot to the touch.
