Do you want to add lights or a ceiling fan to a room or part of the home that has no existing electrical? Replacing an old fixture with a new one is much easier and often can be done really quickly. However, when lights or ceiling fans need to be added to an area without previous electrical prep what next? Simon Electric will share how new electrical fixtures are added so homeowners can have more light or better air circulation in the home. Many homeowners often ask if it is possible of add a light or ceiling fan to a space with no current electrical exit point. The answer to this question is yes, a new fixture can be installed. However, there are a number of steps that are involved. Following is what it takes to add a new fixture to a home.

Adding New Electrical Wiring to an Existing Line

When adding a new fixture it will require a new electrical line to be added. To do this, the first step is turning off the nearest electrical circuit breaker so a new line can be attached to the circuit. By turning off the circuit, you make sure that installation of the new wiring is safer. The next step is to determine where the new fixture will be installed. Often it is best that the fixture hardware connects to a ceiling support joist as light fixtures can weigh between 10 to 50 pounds. At times the homeowner wants a light fixture placed where there is no proper support. This is very dangerous and is not to code. Once a safe location for the new light fixture has been determined, a hole is cut in the ceiling and the electrical box and mounting hardware (the saddle) is screwed in place. Once the hardware is properly secured to the joist, the next step will be to run the wiring to the light fixture to the nearest wall switch. A fishing tape is often used to feed the wiring through the ceiling and to the wall switch. However, if there is no wall switch to connect to, a whole new circuit must be added. This adds more work to this process. Older homes often used lamp and outlet to light up the home and at times, there is no wall switch. Modern homes usually do not have this problem and adding a new fixture is much easier.

Mounting New Light Fixture

Once the wiring has been run through the ceiling and connected to the wall switch, the last step is mounting the new fixture. The fixture is wired and then mounted. Once this is complete, the circuit breaker is turned back on and the fixture can be tested.
