One Breaker Keeps Tripping in Delray Beach, FL? Troubleshooting Ground Faults & More

When a home electrical panel breaker trips, in most cases it is no big deal. The circuit overloads and the breakers trip. This is normal and is a safety procedure to prevent overheating and fires. However, breakers should only trip occasionally. If you have a circuit that is frequently tripping the breaker, this is a sign there is a problem. Most of the problem can be located through the faulty circuit. However, that isn’t always the case. Simon Electric will share why a breaker may frequently trip and when you need electrical assistance.

How to Prevent & Fix an Electrical Overload

Overloading a circuit will cause a breaker to trip. Overloads can occur at any time and can lead to overheating. However, if a single circuit is being excessively used, this will cause that breaker to trip frequently. If you find a single breaker repeatedly tripping, look at the room that uses the breakers that trip. What electrical devices are being used and how much. Some electrical devices can demand too much power from a circuit, especially if it is being used for multiple devices. Rooms that are filled with computers, TVs, consoles and other entertainment devices are often the culprit. The next room to be overloaded are kitchens. You may need to either remove some electrical devices and spread the energy demand to other circuits or add more circuits to the areas of the home where more power is needed.

Electrical Maintenance

Modern devices and appliances often require a lot of power. Due to the strain or demand of power, some older wiring systems can easily overheat and cause the breaker to trip. Breakers tripping can also occur if there is a loose connection or complete disconnection. Often the circuit lines will need to be traced and see if there is a loosened or disconnected wire. If the wiring is loose or disconnected this can cause power to build up and not properly continue to follow throughout the rest of that line. When the energy builds up it will cause the circuits to overload and trip the breaker. Often it takes a professional electrician to trace the source of the disconnection or loose wiring. Another similar problem is when a connection is damaged or an active wire comes in contact with a neutral wire. When the two wires come in contact, this causes an overflow and short circuits the system. This will cause the circuit breaker to trip. If the connections are damaged and the two continue to come in contact, it can cause a strong enough spark to lead to a fire.

Ground Fault Troubleshooting

If an active wire comes in contact with a ground wire, this causes Ground Faults. When the active wire touches the ground wire, it causes a massive current to flow through the circuit. To prevent an electrical hazard the breaker will trip as a result. The Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) could also be wearing out and in some cases, not be present in the home at all. If a breaker keeps tripping, contact an electrician and have them check the GFCI it may require the need to be replaced or installed.
