Simon Electric Outlines Options when Updating Electrical Outlets

Standard Two (2) Prong Power Outlet: If you want to install an outlet in your home some people will choose to go with a two prong option. The outlet will usually be a dual where it has two of the two prongs. The two prong has two slots for a cord to plug goes into as the name suggests. There is a neutral side and a what is called a hot side. There is no ground wire in these outlets and that means they should not be used for any high wattage items used such as a hair dryer and some other appliances.

Three (3) Prong Outlet: Another option and one that will be more common throughout the house are called a three prong. The two elongated slots are the same as the two prong but it has a third opening that is called the ground. This is the best type of outlet to have in homes that include computers and other electronics that are used most commonly in a house. These are a great option to have in areas that are not going to have access to moisture.

GFCI Outlet: When you are having an outlet that is installed in a room that will be wet or has moisture then you want to use a GFCI. This means all the bathrooms, kitchens and outdoors to name the main few. The GFCI has a red button on the actual outlet that acts as a ground fault circuit interrupter so that if there is any electrical shock it will trip the GFCI. This means that the electric current will be stopped and this has helped save people from being electrocuted. If you have a GFCI outlet that is not working you can press the reset button to reset the circuit.

USB Outlet: A new and upcoming option for some homes is to have a USB outlet installed in the house. It seems like everyone is looking for a place to plug in their smart phone and tablet. That is where this outlet can come in handy. You can have an outlet that has been lined with several outlets that are USB compatible. Then you can use that outlet to insert any cord that has this type of connection.
