Why Light Bulbs are Burning Out All Over Your Lake Worth, FL House; Power Surge & More

When you find yourself replacing light bulbs frequently you may begin to think something might be wrong with the light fixtures, the electrical system or perhaps it’s due to cheap bulbs. Incandescent light bulbs should last around 900 hours, which on average rounds up to four months. When you find you’re replacing light bulbs, especially LED lights more often than every four months, then there is a problem. However determining the cause may prove difficult. Simon Electric will share what often causes light bulbs to burn out prematurely.

Are Light Bulbs Supposed to Get Hot?

Often bulbs burn out prematurely because they are getting too hot. Light bulbs will heat and burn out when the improper wattage of bulb is used for the fixture. Each light fixture will have the recommended wattage written on it. If a light bulb is higher than the recommended wattage of the light fixture, the bulb will become too hot. When an incandescent light bulb becomes too hot, the filament heats up which causes the bulb to burn out. LED bulbs also can burn out if the wrong wattage is used. To help prevent the cost of replacing light bulbs, make sure you know your light fixture’s wattage requirement and use the right bulbs.

Shaking of Light Bulb Filament

Areas and fixtures that are exposed to frequent vibration can shorten the life of the filament in incandescent light bulbs. Fixtures and areas such as garage door opener lights, ceiling fans or homes with multiple floors are exposed to frequent vibrations. Preventing vibration is impossible. However, you can change your incandescent light bulbs for LED which aren’t affected by vibrations.

Light Bulb Won’t Connect

When a light bulb is screwed too tightly into the light bulb socket, it can depress the metal connection tabs. The tabs are located at the bottom of the socket. When the tabs become depressed, the electrical connection is actually lost and often the bulbs will flicker first. As the bulbs flicker, it causes the bulbs to burn out more quickly. When replacing your burnt out bulbs with the correct voltage, make sure to not screw them in too tightly. If the tabs have been depressed, cut power to the light fixture and pull the tab forward.

Light Bulb Burns Out Due to Power Surge

If you have checked that you are using the correct bulb (wattage), and your light fixtures are not exposed to vibrations and the tabs are not depressed, your home could be victim of another electrical problem. You may have faulty electrical wiring or even an appliance that is causing power surges frequently throughout your home. Often used appliances such as the dryer, dish washing machine and the refrigerators all can cause power surges, especially as they age and develop problems. These power surges can burn out bulbs and trip breakers. You may need the aid of a licensed electrician to determine if your home is victim of power surge and possibly the source.
