For those who’ve never considered the care of your home’s electrical system, Simon Electric will share some basic electrical care tips to help save money and prevent future electrical problems.

Indoor Electrical Safety Tips at Home

Unplug Chargers: Most people don’t consider an empty charger a drain on your home power. However, empty chargers can still withdraw power all of the time. To completely reserve your power and cut down costs, make sure you all always unplug your charger when not in use.

Space Around Outlets: Make sure you clear away furniture and other objects away from outlets. In the event an outlet sparks, it can cause house fires if the sparks land on furniture, curtains, and other flammable items in your home.

Use the Right Light Bulbs: Check your fixture’s light bulb wattage requirements. Never use too high of a wattage light bulb or it can lead to power overloads and can cause electrical damage throughout the system.

Never Use Damaged Cords: When extension cords or other cables become damaged or the wires become exposed, avoid using them. Damaged cords can create hot spots and burn the contact area causing fires, or they can cause electrical shocks. It is safer to replace cords as they break or when wires become exposed.

Use GCFI Outlets: In all bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens or power supply within six feet of water, you should use GCFI outlets (Ground Fault Interrupter). These outlets should be replaced as they age or break to maintain electrical safety in damp or humid areas.

Test Safety Life Systems: Smoke and CO detectors should be checked to ensure that batteries are good and they are operating. It is recommended you check your home safety life systems every three months to make sure they are still operating and don’t require new batteries.

Outdoor Electrical Tips

Keep Electrical Cords Dry: Extension cords or equipment power cords that go to pools or other outdoor electrical features should be protected and kept dry. On rainy days unplug extension cords and bring them indoors. If some power cords can’t be brought inside then wind them up and get them off the ground. Cover them with a plastic grocery bag to help keep them dry and prevent damages.

Check for Damages: Outdoor power supply outlets or cords should be checked often for any damages. Check for splits in the protective covering and look for exposed wiring. If outlets have any burn marks, this is a sign for concern. It is recommended you replace any exterior outlets that have burn marks.

Landscape Lighting: For those who have landscape lighting that runs off of ground power lines, know where those lines are and make sure not to dig near electrical wiring. In general, it is a good idea to know where all of your ground cables are and avoid digging near your home power lines.
