Electrical Fire Prevention in South Bay, FL; Don’t Overload Circuits, Schedule an Inspection & More

Electrical safety is a major concern and is continually perfected. However, even with our best efforts there are still about 25,000 house fires each year that are associated with electrical sources. To help prevent your home from becoming another statistic, Simon Electric would like to share a few ways you to increase your home’s electrical safety.

Prevent Overloading an Outlet or Circuit

Appliances use a dedicated circuit to prevent overloading a single outlet or circuit. When a single outlet is used to provide power to an entertainment center such as TVs, gaming consoles and/or computers, it can overload the circuit. Resist the temptation to keep power strips on a single outlet. An outlet may be able to handle a single power strip. However, avoid placing multiple power strips in a single outlet. Overloading a circuit can cause the circuit to overheat and lead to a fire.

Install GFCI Outlets in Kitchens, Bathrooms & Laundry Rooms

GFCI outlets are designed to protect the home and keeps the circuit from shorting out if water comes in contact with the power supply. Areas such as kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry rooms should all use GFCI outlets. If the GFCI outlet goes out, make sure you have it replaced. In older homes, the GFCI outlet may not be present. If so, consider updating your home with a GFCI outlet to ensure your home’s safety.

Unplug Appliances & Electrical Devices when Not in Use or Unattended

Space heaters and appliances such as the oven or stove are often responsible for many house fires. Never leave the stove, even for a second. When using space heaters always turn it off when you leave the room, even if you are leaving for only a few minutes. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Flammable Material Safety

Curtains that are near cords, plugs or even outlets are at risk of catching on fire. Electrical burners such as wax aroma, diffusers, and other similar electrical devices should be placed on safe surfaces. Some fires have been caused by electrical devices or other flammable materials that came in contact with each other.

Replace Old & Outdated Appliances.

Outdated appliances are like a ticking time bomb, especially old microwaves that may spark or leave behind a burning scent after it’s been used. Coffee makers or toaster ovens are equally at risk of causing on fire. As appliances age they become more prone to electrical overloads and sparking which often leads to an electrical fire.

Routine Electrical Inspections

Electrical inspections can help reveal unknown problems and prevent electrical fires. Wiring connections are tested. If there is a problem in the connection, such as it has become loose, sparks occur or heat develops which leads to a fire. There are a number of little things that are inspected. The electrical panel is also inspected which controls the influx of power. If a circuit overheats the panel trips the breaker. With the power turned off it helps prevent a number of electrical problems including fires.
