Christmas Lights & Holiday Electrical Safety in Wellington, FL; Don’t Daisy Chain Extension Cords & More

The holiday season starts at different times for different people. Some start the day after Halloween, others the day after Thanksgiving. Everyone looks forward to the beautiful lights that come with the holidays. But those pretty lights can become a big problem if they are misused and create fire hazards.

Visual Lighting Inspection

Indoor and outdoor lighting needs to be inspected every year. If the lights or cords show any signs of damage they will need to be replaced. Using damaged lights and cords increases fire risk because the protective coating can’t prevent the exposed wires from possibly sparking. Don’t purchase cheap lighting if you don’t want to run the risk of a fire this holiday season. Cheap lights are usually made from low-grade materials that can’t hold up to the use they claim to. It’s better to spend a little more money and buy better quality lighting. They come from more reputable sources and are UL listed. LED lights are a much safer option because they produce less heat. They also last longer and use less electricity too.

Holiday Electrical Safety

Safety should be at the forefront. The last thing you want is to get hurt before the holiday season starts. Make sure you use a stable ladder on a solid surface with a spotter below as you hang your lights. Your spotter can help avoid slips and can help break a fall. Always check to make sure the ladder your using can support your weight.
Don’t use nails, tacks or staples to hang your lights. Using sharp objects can damage the wiring and become a fire hazard. There are light hooks you can purchase that will secure your lighting without damaging them. Another benefit is that you won’t be putting holes into your home.

Waterproof Outdoor Lights

Waterproof lighting is designed to prevent water from coming into contact with electricity. Moisture can prevent your lights from working and there’s the risk of electrical shock. Never touch a cord that has fallen into water. You need to turn the power off at the breaker box before you can unplug it and remove it.

Don’t Use Outdoor Lights Inside

Outdoor lights get hotter than indoor lights and should never be used indoors. The hotter lights get, the higher the risk is that they will catch on fire.

Don’t Plug an Extension Cord into Another

The habit of plugging multiple cords together happens more often during the holidays because there’s just so much to plug in! We stack cords when there aren’t enough outlets. When you put too much pressure on your outlets you can exceed voltage limits. This of course creates a power surge and a possible fire. Avoid power surges by using LEDs, a surge protector, and a timer. Timers become useful if you are prone to leaving lights on.
