More and more people are finding that there are several benefits that come from switching over to driving an electric vehicle. Not only is it great for the environment, but you can see some significant cost savings as well when you rely on a battery to get you around rather than gasoline. If you have recently purchased an EV, it won’t take you long to realize the importance of having a home charging station installed in your home. Simon Electric is here to talk about what it takes to charge and electric vehicle and why you may want to consider having a charging station installed in your home.

EV Charging Connector Types

There are four different types of electric vehicle charging. Following is a rundown of EV charging basics:

  • Level 1 Charging (120v): Every electric car is sold with a charging cord that can be plugged into a regular three prong 120v outlet. The biggest problem that comes with this type of charging, is the amount of time it takes to charge. It can take up to 24 hours or longer to fully charge your car’s battery. If you don’t need to drive it every day, this may be okay.
  • Level 2 Charging: To achieve level 2 charging or 240v charging, you will need to have a it installed professionally in your garage. Most people that own electric vehicles have level 2 charging installed in their garage so they can fully charge your car within an 8 hour period. This is also the most common public charging available. You can find level 2 chargers at gas stations, shopping malls, airports and more.
  • DC Fast Charging: When you find a place that offers DC fast charging, you are able to get 50-90 miles in 30 minutes of charging. Many dealerships have these charging stations as well as other commercial establishments.
  • Tesla Superchargers: If you drive a Tesla, you know that you can’t just use any charger to charge your vehicle. They have a special charging network designed specifically to charge their vehicles. They charge at a much faster rate than most other charging stations.

Benefits of Electric Car Charging at Home

The biggest benefit that comes from a home charging station is the fact that you don’t have to pay an added fee to charge your vehicle. At several commercial locations, you have to pay to plug your car in to charge. At home, you pay for the electricity used and that is it. The other biggest benefit is the time it takes to charge your vehicle. Without a 240v charger, you can’t really plan to drive your vehicle each day as it won’t be fully charged and ready to go.
