Unplug Electronics & Appliances when Not in Use

Did you know that if you have chargers and other electronics plugged in, they will be using electricity whether you are actively using them or not? This is known as ‘vampire energy loads.’ You will find that you pay at least 5% more on your bill each month for items plugged in and not in use. If you have a power strip that can be turned off and on when you need it, this will save you money without having to plug them in over and over again.

Install Dimmer Switches

The lights in your home use a great deal of electricity. For the average person, 12% of their electric bill comes from lights. If you have dimmer switches in your home, you can set the light so that you aren’t using as much wattage to illuminate your space.

Adjust the Temperature on Your Electric Hot Water Heater

Your hot water heater is another source of energy usage. If you turn your hot water heater down to 120F, you will see substantial energy savings and will still be able to enjoy a hot shower. Speaking of showers, you should be taking a shower rather than a bath to save money as well. When you are on vacation, go ahead and turn off the hot water heater to see even more savings.

Washing Clothes in Cold Water VS Hot Water

Who knew that 90% of the energy used to wash your laundry comes from heating the water to do it?!? That means that only 10% of the energy will go to actually making the machine operate. If it is at all possible, you should try and wash your laundry in cold water to help cut down energy costs. Sometimes, if the clothes you are washing are heavily soiled, you may have to use hot water.

Upgrading to Energy Efficient Appliances

Okay, so maybe this one isn’t really that simple, but if you update your older appliances for newer, more efficient ones, you may be surprised at how much money you can save. Old appliances can use twice as much energy to do the same job that new efficient models can do. If you are a homeowner, you may be able to find local incentives for upgrading as well.
