How to Lower Power Consumption of Household Appliances & Reduce Home Electricity Bill

Is your home power bill getting a little too high? Many homeowners will see their power bill continually increase but not know how to reduce it. There are actually many ways you can reduce your home electrical needs and cut down on your home power bills. Simon Electric will share what in your home is sucking down the power and a few ways you can help reduce your home power consumption and lower that monthly power bill.

Major Home Appliances Use the Most Electricity

The many power feeders in your home are appliances. The HVAC system, refrigerator, washer and dryer, and water heater suck up a lot of power and mostly especially older appliances. Due to the need to reduce power consumption in home major appliances, manufacturers are being pushed to build more energy efficient machines. Modern appliances are designed to use 20% to 50% less power depending on the appliance, which together can help reduce much of the energy consumption. When possible, it is recommended to replace old appliances with more modern efficient ones which is a big step in reducing your power bill.

How to Lower Power Consumption of Household Appliances

Water Heater: Water heaters can be tweaked to reduce how much power they consume by adjusting the temperature. The water heaters are often ranked as the third power consumption appliance. By adjusting the temperature down to 120 degree F you can help save power and still enjoy hot showers.
Use Cold Water: When washing dishing or doing laundry, try using cold water whenever possible. Again, the hot water heater takes up a lot of power to heat water. The less hot water you use, the more you can save.
Dishwasher: A few people, when washing dishing, use the dish washer versus hand washing large loads. The use of the dish washer, which can save both power and water, can be amplified by using the “dry cycle” over the “heated-dry” which uses about 15% less energy with the same results.

Unplug Appliances When Not in Use

Many people don’t realize that a phone charger that is not charging a phone is still drawing out power along with many other devices that aren’t being used. Often referred to as “electrical vampires” there are a number of electrical devices that are consuming small amounts of power, even when turned off. The only way to stop these electrical vampires that are found throughout the home is by removing the power connection. There are two ways to stop the vampires in your home. One way is by unplugging all of the unused items in your home every day and only plug them in when in use. Another method is by using a power strip that cuts off all power with a flip of a switch. Many people prefer using power strips versus plugging and unplugging their electrical items each time. If you wonder who the vampires are, it’s just about everything. Entertainment devices, chargers, computers and consoles, pretty much anything that plugs into the wall will continue to draw out power.
