How to Lower Electric Bill in House or Apartment

Energy Efficient Appliances – Old appliances such as refrigerator, dryers, and HVAC units consume much more power than modern appliances. If possible, replace old appliances with better or more efficient models to help reduce your energy usage.
Unplug Electrical Devices when Not Using – Phone chargers are able to continue to use power even when the phone is charged. This is true for many electrical devices inside the home. Known as vampire energy loads, you may want to remember to unplug certain devices to stop unnecessary consumption of electricity. Again, unplug some of these devices when they are not in use. Start with cell phones and other mobile device chargers, TV and video players, gaming consoles, computers, and even kitchen appliances such as microwaves, coffee machines and etc.
Use Smart Power Strips – Smart power strip can automatically shut off certain power strips inside your home. Programmable like thermostats, unneeded power supply can be shut off at night or while you’re away. You can use Alexa, Siri, or even Google home to schedule when to have the power strips turn on or off.
Avoid Peak Power Times – There are some times during the day that cost more money to use power than other time during the day. This is oddly true, it is known as peak usage. The power company will determine which time of the day and the season these peaks occur. At this time it will cost you more money to use certain electrical items. Avoid using your dryers, laundry machine, dishwasher, and other appliances during the “peak usage” hours. The power company should have this information either on their website or you can call to learn when the peak power times are and avoid using heavy appliances.
Utilize Dimmer Switches – Dimmer switches are an excellent way to reduce power consumption. Along with light sensors, you can limit much of the wattage being used at certain times. We don’t always need a full lighting system. Both a senor and dimmer switch provides more control as to how much wattage is being used for lighting.
Upgrade to LED Light Bulbs – LED light bulbs can put out more light for far less wattage than other light bulbs. They also last longer meaning you save money and reduce the need to replace light bulbs. Start by replacing the light bulb in the areas or rooms you use most. Over time continue to replace all of your home light bulbs with LED bulbs.
