Importance of Grounding in Lake Worth, FL; What Happens if Ground Wire is Not Connected?

You will often hear electricians ask about “ground” wiring systems. Many wonder why ground is so important and why is it used. Ground is essential to providing homes and other human structures with proper electrical safety. Simon Electric would like to explain more about ground wiring, its safety systems and without it, how we would be at risk of electrical danger.

What is Grounding or Earthing?

The ground wiring basically attaches to all of the outlets throughout the home and to the electrical panel. It is difficult to break down all that the ground is doing but essentially it is removing the access power from within your home to prevent overloads or overheating. The positive energy inside your home’s electrical system or that access energy is pulled out of the home due to the negative charge in the ground wiring, which in turn provides a safe place to discharge that excess energy.

Importance of Ground Wire Connection

It is essential to provide excess power a safe place to go. Without a ground system the energy can build up inside the home which can lead to electrocutions or fires. Excess energy is a common occurrence which is why ground lines became standard for all electrical systems. All homes have a ground wiring system. However, one danger that occasionally occurs is when the ground system is inadequate for the needs of a home or building. Without a proper ground system, the excess energy will seek out other paths to travel and/or discharge. These other pathways are often the electrical box or outlets. This is extremely hazardous. If they are not properly grounded the electricity can travel through outlets and pass through humans that many come in contact with an appliance or other electrical device that’s connected to the outlet. This excess electrical charge that isn’t properly discharged can discharge into a person and kill them instantly.

How to Test for Proper Grounding

It is recommended you have your home electrical system inspected by a licensed electrician. The National Electric Code association has a set requirement inspection system put in place that professional electricians follow to make sure the grounding is adequate. One major occurrence that leads to many inadequate ground systems is when the copper water line fails to be bound to the ground. A major concern is the excess charge using the water piping as a path way may discharge into a person when they turn on the tap. As many know, water and strong electrical currents are a perfect recipe for electrocutions. This is one of the many faults an electrician looks for when they inspect the ground system. To ensure proper safety it is recommended you have a home electrical safety inspection on home’s older than 15 to 20 years old. Older systems may have been compromised and require immediate repairs.
