Lights Go Out But No Tripped Breaker & Why is a Light Flickering in My Cloud Lake, FL House?

It may seem odd when some of the lights go out inside the home. In such cases you go check the circuit breaker box to find the breakers never tripped. What does it mean when all the lights lose power or may be flickering on and off, yet the breaker never tripped? There are a number of reasons why the lights may lose power without the breakers tripping. Simon Electric troubleshoot why lights will lose power or flicker when the breakers are not the cause.

Troubleshooting Light Not Working

If one or more light fixtures seem to lose power and you go and check the breaker to find the breaker never tripped, it may seem daunting as to why the lights are out. When trying to determine why the lights have gone out and the breakers are still on, the culprit may be an electrical imbalance. In such cases the GFCI outlet might have tripped which causes any light in the same circuit to go out. There are GFCI outlets in bathrooms, the kitchen and often the laundry room. You can press the reset button on the local GFCI  outlet or if you’re unsure, press them all. However, sometimes the issue may be due to damaged or loose wiring within the circuit. Wiring connections can become loose over time or may be damaged by rodents. Often loose connections or damaged wiring will require the aid of a professional electrician to locate and repair the problem.

Why are My Lights Flickering?

Often when a light fixture or multiple fixtures begin to flicker constantly, many people believe it is a faulty circuit breaker. Often the source of a flickering light isn’t a breaker but either the light switch or a faulty light bulb. First change out the bulbs in the light fixtures that are flickering. If the flickering continues go over to the light switch and see if it feels hot. When a light switch feels hot it means there is a problem. However sometimes faulty light switches may not feel hot. Even so, it is usually a good call to change the light switch out for a new one and see if that corrects the problems. If the lights are still flickering, see if the lights flicker when an appliance is running such as the laundry machine or dishwasher. If so then there is a problem in the electrical system and that can be dangerous. There could be a loose connection that can cause a fire. If the lights flicker it is often a good time to call an electrical service to come to your home.
