Signs of Electrical Problems in Your Home

Burnt Electrical Outlet: When burn marks appear on the outlet face cover, this is a cause for concern. It happens when the hot wire touches the neutral wire. Since all electrical wires are protected and covered, the burn mark indicates that the protective covering has worn away. This occurs after time due to corrosion.
Flickering & Dimming Lights: Lights that flicker or appear dimmer more than just every once in a while indicate that there is some loose wiring, or it can also be due to voltage fluctuation. Voltage fluctuation will also cause light bulbs to glow brighter or dim, or the bulb will burn out faster. If there is a loose connection somewhere in your wiring then is can cause sparks or overheating that can lead to electrical fires.
Outlet Smells Like Burning: If you’re smelling smoke this could be the beginning of an electrical fire. Short cycling can cause brief or serious fires within the walls which can spread to insulation and other surrounding materials. The fire will give off a scent of smoke or burning and alert you as to the problem. It is recommended you get everyone out of the home. Even if after time has passed, and you can’t see or smell smoke, it may have burned out on its own before it could become a major fire. Nevertheless, have your electrical system thoroughly inspected by a licensed electrician.
Electrical Buzzing Noise from Wall: Buzzing or clicking noises when the lights are turned is due to faulty wiring. The connection could be loose, or the wiring has been eroded or damaged. If you’re hearing a buzzing or clicking noise it is recommended you have the wiring inspected.
Mice Chewing Electrical Wires: If your home has had a recent rodent infestation, you might be facing a major electrical problem. Mice and rats that invade homes often chew on wiring. This is due to the protective cover of the wire. It is made with a plant substance that the rodent can smell and detect and often mistakes for food. If your home has had a rodent infestation, there is a high chance the wiring got damage, or the wiring is exposed which is dangerous.
Electrical Circuit Overload: It is not normal for circuit breakers to repeatedly trip. Circuit breakers will shut off or trip to protect the system from overheating. If the breakers are tripping frequently, then there is a problem. Often it is due to a ground fault or short circuit.
